Homeowners, volunteers, donors and Flagler Habitat for Humanity staff gathered Friday afternoon to dedicate the new home of Toni Spencer.

The Squirrel Place home was sponsored by Hammock Dunes and is the 80th home to be completed and dedicated by Flagler Habitat and the final dedication of the year, which marks the organizations 20th anniversary.

“It takes many people to build a home; it really takes a community,” said Lindsay Elliott, executive director of Flagler Habitat. “And a little more behind the scenes is the financial contribution that it takes to build the home.”

Since 2004, Habitat has partnered with Hammock Dunes to build more than 15 homes.

“I can’t thank you enough for the support that you are giving to Habitat,” she said at the dedication.

For Spencer, the support was overwhelming. Standing in the doorway with her sons, Carlos Hubbert Jr. and Cayden Harris, just after opening her front door with the keys for the first time, all she could do was express gratitude.

“It was the greatest experience that I ever went through,” she said. “With Habitat, they taught me everything about becoming a homeowner. It’s just unbelievable.”

Flagler Habitat will take the summer off from builds and begin again in September.
