Bethune Cookman kids help Halifax Urban Ministries double the amount of food it distributed to homeless residents last year; and, citing record numbers, the humane society extends its cat-adoption promotion.

Pre Med Society drives for homeless

Facing what Halifax Urban Ministries Community Relations Director Mark Geallis called a “critical shortage” of donated food, the Bethune Cookman Pre Medical Society donated three shopping carts full of groceries to HUM this week, which they collected during a food drive.

The donation coincides with HUM’s Love Your Neighbor Food Drive. This year, HUM plans to distribute more than 500 tons of food to local homeless residents, more than double the 240 tons distributed in 2011.

“Not only has the need increased due to the economy and a reduction in other programs, but HUM has grown from a few coastal locations to 13 distribution points throughout Volusia County,” Geallis said. “Through our partnerships we are now also distributing hundreds of bags of food at schools to families of children that suffer from nutritional challenges”.

Humane Society adopts 65 in three days, extends promotion

Halifax Humane Society’s Cinco De Meow-O adoption promotion last week was successful in adopting 65 cats, breaking last year’s record of 47. Due to the strong response, the society will extend the same promotion — in which all cats 1 year and older have adoption fees reduced to $5 — this weekend, as well.

The promotion, held at 2364 LPGA Blvd., will continue for the first 30 cats adopted.
