Holy Dormition Church cooks up some culture

Can’t get enough homemade ethnic food? Neither can the congregation at Holy Dormition Church, at 17 Buckskin Lane. Women from the church are now making the Eastern European staple pierogi, to sell at the church.

Dumplings filled with potato, mixed with cheddar or sauerkraut, the church’s pierogis will be available after 10 a.m. Sunday service, as well as after 10 a.m. service Tuesday and Thursday.

Starting June 6, the church will also begin remaining open after Thursday morning service for personal devotion and coffee with Father Vince Brady.

Pine Trail collects most box tops in Volusia and Flagler

Ms. L. Gilbert’s kindergarten class led the charge at Pine Trail Elementary School for box top collections, bringing in a total of 2,600. For collecting the most in the school, the students won a pizza party. But Pine Trail’s collections as a school are also nothing to sneeze at.

The school collected more than 38,000 box tops — more than any other school throughout Volusia and Flagler counties.

Camera Club preps for you-judge-it spring exhibit

The Casements Camera Club will hang members’ work June 1, at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center, for its spring exhibit. Set to run through the end of June, the exhibit will ask residents to judge their favorite pieces.

Ormond steps up for new dance steps

What do letters, numbers, music and sign language have in common?  They are all elements of Bokwa, the latest international dance/fitness craze which has just invaded Ormond Beach.

Gold’s Gym, 333 W. Granada Blvd., will host its very first Bokwa master class 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 25, to introduce beginners to the form and groom instructors.

“Everyone loves to dance,” Heidi Nates, class co-ordinator at the gym, said, emphasizing the “welcoming and engaging” atmosphere of Bokwa. “(It) delivers on its promise that people of all ages can learn the steps, never feel lost and progress at their own levels.”

Bokwa is a light form of boxing (arm movements — no punching) and kwaito, a traditional South African dance.

“It really will empower intergenerational connections,” Dave Lieb, Gold’s sales manager said. “Bokwa will add a whole new dimension to our gym’s passion for fitness.”
