An artsy person since childhood, Jenica “Hen” Frederickson has always had a bright spark for creativity.
Frederickson, 34, is an artist and personal chef who frequently volunteers at the theater club at Indian Trails Middle School. On Wednesday evening, after being nominated by the school, she won a VAMMY award from by Flagler Volunteer Services.
“I came from a very creative approach to education,” said Frederickson, whose parents ran a theater-based school in Gastonia, N.C. “Arts are just a way of expressing yourself.”
Before delving fully into the arts, though, Frederickson had a wide array of work experience. She attended South College for two years, where she majored in legal studies. She left and began working for an entertainment company. She later worked as a corporate buyer for a military company.
Frederickson moved to Palm Coast four years ago, and since then she has been involved with all things artistic. She runs an art company, “House of Hen,” writes poetry and works as a freelancer. She has also contributed to the Hollingsworth Art Gallery and has volunteered as a makeup artist and an actor at the Flagler Playhouse.
“I was always on the stage,” she said. “I was always acting, singing, dancing, directing (and) writing.”
At Indian Trails, she works with students and enjoys watching them strengthen their talents and bloom into rich performance artists.
“There is an enormous amount of talent here. I have seen more talent in Palm Coast than anywhere I’ve lived,” she said. “There’s something about this community.”
Frederickson said her VAMMY award “is proof that I’m consistently putting (the message) out into the universe.” However, she said her biggest reward is seeing her volunteer work have a positive effect on children.
The VAMMY awards, “Volunteers Always Magically Making Yes Happen,” were done in partnership with the volunteer organization and the Flagler County School District, Flagler Volunteer Service executive director Suzy Gamblain wrote in an email. They took place at the Flagler Auditorium.
