Knights donate $4,200 to citizens with disabilities

Five Ormond Beach schools and two charities serving those with developmental disabilities recently received a $4,200 funding bump thanks to the Knights of Columbus Prince of Peace Council 8791’s annual Campaign for Citizens with Disabilities Fund Drive.

The funds were raised by selling Tootsie Rolls at area stores earlier this year.

“Charity is the first of four principles upon which our order is built,” said John Malafronte, grand knight of Council 8791. “We would also like to thank Publix, Walmart and Winn-Dixie for giving us access to their storefronts and customers.”

This year’s grant recipients are The ARC of Volusia and the special-education classes at Ormond Elementary, Tomoka Elementary, Pine Lakes Elementary, Pathways Elementary and Ormond Beach Middle School. An extra contribution was also made to a statewide Knights of Columbus disabilities charity.

The Knights of Columbus of Peace Council has about 235 members and was founded in 1985.

Autism walk raises $200

Local Pampered Chef representative Heidi Nates teamed up with Autism Speaks to host  a night of cooking and fun, which resulted in about $200 raised for Joseph Davis and Connie Foster, two area residents diagnosed with autism.

Iron Horse Saloon will also host its 2nd-annual Family Party 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, to fund-raise for Autism Speaks. Featuring a bounce house, live music and a cookout, the event cost $10, with kids getting in free.

Founded in 2005, Autism Speaks has committed more than $195 million to autism research and resources nationwide.
