There were a lot of strange visitors to the Ormond Memorial Art Museum Friday, as the gallery opened its latest exhibit, “Rated G for Graphic,” a celebration of comic book-style sequential art.

With an form also popular in video games, the show drew visitors, artists and volunteers, many of whom dressed as characters from their favorite games, movies and books.

John Wilton, chairman of the Volusia County Cultural Council and a trustee of the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach, curated the show.

“If you look at the art by Paolo Rivera, you can’t find better painting,” he said. “This has all the fundamentals of art in a different application. Our culture is full of this type of art.”

Rivera, a graduate of Mainland High School and cover artist for Marvel Comics, was one of the exhibitors at the show. Others included John Allison, a graphic artist, Tiffany and Tammy Dao, video game artists for Iron Galaxy Orlando, and James Greene, a graphic novelist.

“I haven’t seen anything like this in Volusia County,” Wilton said of this type of art exhibit, adding that he's only seen similarly themed shows in New York.

Susan Richmond, museum director, said the show is meant to bring younger people into the museum and introduce adults to a growing art form.

“We all play video games,” she said; "we just don’t see the art side of it."

Hannah Byers, of Daytona Beach, called the show "dynamic."

“I applaud them putting this together,” she said. “This will get kids interested in art and they’ll come back to the museum.”

The show will run until Nov. 17, at 78 E. Granada Blvd.
