The Marineland Right Whale Project caught a glimpse of a mom whale and her calf on Saturday.

It's the season for whale watching in Ormond Beach.

A group called the Marineland Right Whale Project spotted a female right whale named Boomerang and her calf Saturday morning, off the coast of Ormond Beach.

"The pair is provisionally identified as Whale No. 2503, Boomerang, with her third calf," the group wrote on their blog. "On Dec. 4, 2005, we photographed Boomerang with her first calf as they swam past Marineland and into history; this is the whale that took her calf all the way to Corpus Christi, Texas, in January."

Boomerang returned to the Southeast in 2009 with a second calf.

Joy Hampp, project coordinator, said more whales have been returning to this area due to our colder temperatures.

"This has been another interesting year," Hampp said. "In the last three seasons including this one, we've had warmer than normal water temperatures. The number of whales coming had dropped off. Then we had all that cold come through, and now we're starting to see whales. It  just got a lot more exciting."

The whales were spotted near Granada Boulevard.
