Youth black history program inspires change

Children and adults from Mount Calvary Baptist Church played a "Jeopardy" parody game Sunday, called "I'll Take Black History For ...," at the African American Cultural Society Center. And the game proved that, sometimes, the kids can teach the grownups a thing or two.

The skit was just one of 14 performances by African American youths from various Flagler County organizations, in the 11th-annual Youth Black History Reality Program.

“We live in a world where our young people are, in so many cases, teaching us,” said AACS President Stephanie Ecklin. “This Black History Month program and presentation is not just about those from our past, it’s about each and every one of our young people here today.”

In her closing remarks, Ecklin reminded the participants that it only takes one individual to make a difference.

“So many times, we think that one person can’t make a difference, one person can’t make a change,” Ecklin said. “If there is one thing I leave you young people with today, it’s that it only takes one person. ... I encourage you today to be that one person. Don’t let anybody tell you that you cannot make a difference, because you can.”
