Haley McQueen, a junior at Matanzas High School, has been recognized as a 2014 Sunshine State Scholars Award recipient. Each school district throughout the state selected its top 11th-grade student based on academic excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Organized in 1977, the Sunshine State Scholars program provides STEM students with opportunities to meet with successful professionals from STEM-related industries to learn about the latest innovations, discoveries and careers in Florida. Students also meet with recruiters from Florida’s colleges and universities.
Author inspires students to connect with their environment
Author, educator, and artist Peter C. Stone recently presented to more than 600 students at three schools, fusing the creative dynamics of art and science, as well as teaching visual literacy through mythology, symbolism and living systems.
Stone’s latest book, "Waltzes with Giants, The Twilight Journey of the North Atlantic Right Whale," is now available at each of the schools' media centers.
The visit was sponsored by the University of Florida Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience UF/IFAS/Florida Sea Grant and the Florida Wildlife Federation.
Matanzas student creates media stand to sell
Matanzas High School senior Joseph Digby has been working hard to develop and create a media stand to holds iPods, iPads, tablets, cell phones and laptops. The stand is made from poplar wood and is eco-friendly.
The Coffee Spot, the school's gold-certified student based enterprise, is the current vendor of the product and is on sale for $15.
Dinner with Santa helps families in need
Last month, the Student Government Association of Flagler Palm Coast High School hosted its sixth-annual Dinner with Santa, drawing about 150 people.
The SGA students set up five different picture backdrops, including Santa's living room, a Kris Kringle skating rink, FPC Toy Shop with elves helping children make holiday ornaments, Santa's sSleigh soaring through the night sky, and a candy cane village.
The event was designed six years ago. The $3 admission included a pasta dinner. Sponsors were Olive Garden, Tuscan Grill, Pizza Hut and NiKi’s Pizzeria.
