The main character in the 1967 movie “The Graduate” was told that the future is in “plastics.” This prediction turned out to be true and the importance of plastics continues to grow today.

David Pedrotti, president of Modern Mold South, a plastic injection molding company that recently opened in Ormond Beach, agrees that plastics is still a growth industry.

"What we do is 70% medical products," he said. "The rest is aerospace and a ton of other things, including Homeland Security Devices and electrical parts.”

Examples of medical products include syringes and airway devices.

“It’s anything you see in an operating room,” Pedrotti said.

The parent company, Modern Mold and Tool Inc., of Pittsfield, Mass., opened Modern Mold South last September in a 10,000-square-foot production facility at the Hull Pointe Business Park, 1230 N. U.S. 1.

The company is privately owned and was started by Pedrotti’s father in 1950.

Pedrotti said the company opened in Ormond Beach after attending trade shows in Orlando and identifying a need in east-central Florida. There are several medical product manufacturers in the area who are potential customers for Modern Mold South.

Pedrotti said he worked with Joe Mannarino, economic development director for Ormond Beach, before relocating to the area.

Mannarino said he is now introducing Pedrotti to Ormond Beach manufacturing companies in the hope of creating business partnerships.    .

“He designs and manufactures complex plastic moldings,” Mannarino said. “It’s a unique specialty.”

Mannarino added that he is also from Massachusetts, so the two have worked well together.

“We have a commonality,” he said.

Pedrotti said his company has been “well received” in the local business community and they have manufactured one million pieces since opening the Ormond Beach location.

Modern Mold South has four employees but three more are  expected to be hired this year, which would most likely be a foreman, quality-control person and a press operator for a second shift.

Pedrotti said they also plan to add a “clean room” to manufacture parts that must be free of any contaminants. The part is then delivered to the buyer sealed and germ free.

“This is very important in the medical field,” Pedrotti said.

They also plan to add processes such as printing directions or calibrations on parts, assembly and ultrasonic welding.

“We could grow, if everything goes correctly,” Pedrotti said.
