The large number of applicants has made the city of Ormond Beach extend its deadline for the Mayor's Health and Fitness Challenge.

In this case, triple digits are something to brag about.

The Mayor’s Health and Fitness Challenge nearly doubled its number of participants for 2014. So far, 345 people have signed up, according to Christina Maguire, risk manager. Last year’s challenge had 187 participants.

“I guess 187 people had fun last year and told their friends,” Maguire chuckled.

Interested Ormond Beach residents have until Jan. 10 to sign up at room 101 in City Hall. Maguire said the increased interest in the program is due to the changes people saw in their bodies and the willingness to help inspire their neighbors to do the same.

“The people got results, and that is pretty powerful,” Maguire said. “I think people had fun and got to try things they never would have tried. And they got to try them for free. It was a little experiment that was a lot of fun.”
