The wishing to take the stairs in the downtown St. Augustine parking garage will have to channel their inner musician Friday night. As part of an installation project for Laura Mongiovi's advanced sculpture class at Flagler College, Kevin Mahoney has created a musical challenge.

Mahoney created wooden instruments by hand and installed them in the stairways. Each instrument is accompanied by a small box to peep through, which tells the viewer what song they will need to play to get to the next level.

This installation is just one of 17 peep hole projects installed at various locations around downtown.

"The idea came out of my desire to provide students an opportunity to show their work off-campus and gain experience presenting and executing their ideas to members of the community," Mongioviv said. "The peephole boxes provide an interactive experience for art walk visitors, give additional exposure to local businesses and allow students to showcase their creative ideas."

This is the second year Mongioviv has done this project with her students.

The purpose, Mongioviv said, is to make it a scavenger hunt for the public. Each project is different, and each art piece is meant to reflect the space in which it is stationed.

"What I like about it is that only one person can look inside it at a time," Mongioviv said.

Viewers need to come close and peer inside the peep holes to discover the treasure of what the art project is truly about.
