Dr. Seuss comes alive at Old Kings

The Old Kings Elementary School library has gotten a makeover for March. Celebrating the birthday of the well-loved author Dr. Seuss. The tables are now centered with tall "Cat in the Hat" hats and red vases topped with poofs of blue, representing the mischievous Thing 1 and Thing 2.

But the granddaddy of the decorations is the the Dr. Seuss Room. An entire room transformed into a wonderland full of the creatures and places created by Theodor Seuss Geisel, in honor of his birthday and Read Across America Week.

Now in its 17th year, the National Education Association's Read Across America program focuses on motivating children and teens to read, through events, partnerships and reading resources.

"There's such a big push in literacy now and, when you get kids to enjoy reading, that's half the battle; and Dr. Seuss can do that," said teacher Angie Buchnan, as her second-graders buddy-read with Kalena Davis' first-graders.
