The Matanzas Pirates came up short against the St. Augustine Yellow Jackets Monday, Nov. 24, at Matanzas High School.

The Pirates led 13-3 after the first quarter, but the Jackets stormed back to take the lead 20-17 at halftime. Both teams went into the fourth quarter tied at 29, after trading three pointers, and St. Augustine held on to a five-point lead just inside 20 seconds.

With nowhere to drive or pass the ball, Madison Mlinac made a long-range three pointer to trim the lead to two points with 10 seconds on the clock. After The Yellow Jackets made one free throw, Matanzas turned the ball over as time expired.

“It’s a bomber to lose like this,” coach Dan Toblin said. “We didn’t execute well towards the end, and that probably hurt us the most. We went 7-17 from the free throw line. We need to work on that to make sure that we don’t get in situations like this again because we don’t shoot well.”

After nailing his fourth three pointer of the night, Mlinac said, “I thought there was enough time for us to come back, but we made too many mistakes. We have to put this game behind us and try to win our next two in the Kiwanis Shootout tournament.”

Mlinac led the team with 12 points, all coming by way of three pointers. Tahiem Shakir finished with eight points and four rebounds. Phillip Moultrie came off the bench to grab five rebounds and steal a pass.
