Just like the rain, which continued to fall Saturday morning, the teams of walkers which crowded Veteran’s Park in Flagler Beach continued to walk — to fight — at the Flagler County Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, this event calls participants of all ages and abilities to reclaim the future. While most participants have a personal reason for walking, one team that as of Saturday, was leading the fundraising charge for the second year in a row with $7,255, was Park’s Dermatology’s Sweet Sue Strollers.
Sweet Sue Strollers is led by Jodi Roos, whose mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s several years ago.
“I am walking to raise awareness and funds for the disease that broke into my family's world and targeted our beloved mom,” Roos wrote on her fundraising page. “The disease is slowly erasing her memory and mind, but it can't touch her heart, her spirit and it can't seem to take her smile away. She is a light that has illuminated and warmed many souls.”
Roos said that if her participation in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s can assist in finding a cure, then each step gives her hope.
Currently, there is no treatment or cure for Alzheimer’s disease and in the greater Flagler County area, there are approximately 5,000 people living with Alzheimer’s disease. Money raised from the walk will go to critically-needed research and the free support services that the Alzheimer’s Association provides to the community in Flagler County.
“We know that research is our best course to finding a cure,” said Kay Redington, CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association Central and North Florida Chapter. “These walks support the essential funding needed to give scientists and researchers the chance to succeed.”
