Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce ambassadors joined Granada Jewelers for their ribbon cutting in July. Located at 149 E. Granada Blvd. in Granada Plaza, the business recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. The business operated for 20 years until closing in the fall of 2013 and then reopening last year.

Ormond woman in charge of wellness

Marci Schmiege, of Ormond Beach, has been named manager of health promotion and wellness for the five Florida Hospitals in Volusia and Flagler counties.

In this role, she is responsible for overseeing the Change Your Life with Florida Hospital wellness program, which is open to hospital employees and community members alike and offers events, physical challenges, education, online reporting and prizes, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

“Sadly, about 65 percent of Florida's adults are obese or overweight,” Schmiege said. “This is a cause for major concern because obesity can lead to many chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and even cancer. It is my hope that the Change Your Life wellness program can help our community stave off these startling statistics.”

Prior to joining Florida Hospital, she served as the health and wellness coordinator for the State of Nevada.

She also holds national personal training and aerobic certifications and has conducted numerous fitness classes and more than 5,000 personal training sessions.

Schmiege has a bachelor’s degree in biomedical and exercise science from Western Michigan University and a master of business administration from Loyola Graduate School of Business in Chicago.
