This yoga paddle board instructor wants you to take a fall.

If you ever see a gray Smart car pulling an trailer of very large paddle boards, odds are, you’ve spotted Jodi Ascherman.

“I think I like to prove people wrong sometimes,” she laughed. “I like to show people I can handle it.”

Ascherman said yoga was brought into her world over 20 years ago, at a time when she really needed it. Diagnosed with Alopecia areata, she lost all over hair at 25 years old. Though it was difficult at times, Ascherman found the experience really liberating, and necessary in discovering her sense of self. Soon, she found herself on a beach in Egypt, where she met a couple who offered to give her private yoga lessons.

“In just that small time period I saw how profound the effects were,” she said. “I was always physically athletic and coordinated, but yoga utilized my body in a different way.”

During her yoga journey, Ascherman has experiment with many different types of exercise, eventually leading her to paddle board yoga.

“I love being out the water,” she said. “I love to practice outside, breathe fresh air. I feel like I have studio that can go anywhere. And you’re forced to laugh at yourself a lot. Being on the board flips everything around.”

And she said falling, is all a part of the process.

“If you’re not falling you’re only working on your ego,” she said. “A great teacher once told me that. If you’re scared of falling just jump, or I’ll push you.”
