Thanks to Market for a Mission, 100 needy families in the area will receive a turkey and a bag of groceries this holiday season. The Market was a rummage sale organized by Thrivent Financial, 595 N. Nova. Road.

Thrivent representatives presented Gloria Max, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties, with a check for $2,343 on Dec. 11, which will be used to buy turkeys and pies. They also packed 100 bags with donated groceries.

Local churches sold donated items at the Market with a Mission to raise the money, and also donated the grocery items. Proceeds also came from businesses and crafts people who rented booths at the Market.

It was the second year for the market, and Diane Skelley, of Thrivent, said it was well-attended.

“The traffic was amazing,” she said.

The food will be distributed through the Jerry Doliner Food Bank. Max said the food bank is seeking 200 bags this holiday season, so the Thrivent effort fulfilled half of their goal.

“We appreciate all the help they have given us over the years,” she said.

Max is battling cancer and has had three chemotherapy treatments, but is going to work every day, she said at the check presentation. She said working keeps her busy and her mind occupied.

She said there is a great need for donations, because even though the economy is improving, many people have low-wage jobs. She can be reached at 672-0294.
