Class of ’69 set to be the first in city’s ‘Summer Sounds’ series

It’s time to dig out the tie-dye and peace signs you’ve got buried in your closet — the 60s are coming back to Ormond Beach.

The first concert in the city’s Summer Sounds series will feature 60s tribute band Class of 69’ who will perform classics from popular genre of the decade, including Motown, Woodstock, pop rock, British Invasion and country. Made of Dennis Copa, Roland Via, Dan Emerson and Chuck Peterson, this newly found band has already gained popularity with their collection of covered classics.

“We’ve been together two years,” Via said. “There’s so much music from that era, and most of it is good dance music so it makes it really easy to engage the audience. For the older people it’s nostalgic, and the younger people like it because it’s beat-friendly.”

The foursome first had the idea for a decade tribute band after seeing the movie “Wrecking Crew,” a documentary about a group of studio and session musicians that played anonymously on many records in Los Angeles, California during the 1960s.

“We thought it was time to put togethers a 60s act because it’s just a huge catalog of music,” said Via, who is also the former mayor of Holly Hill. “Tribute bands are very popular right now, but instead of becoming a tribute band of a specific act, we became a tribute band of the music of that era.”

Together, the guys dress up in their 60s clothes and try to get the audience as pumped up as they are to remember a prolific era of music. Audience members who see their shows are encouraged to dress up as well.

“It’ll surprise people the wealth and depth of the music we do,” Via said. “That’s the fun part, watching people’s faces when we do this. They are remembering and singing right along. It’s a great time.”
