Belle Terre students show off innovations at Energy Garden

Students from Belle Terre Elementary School presented innovations on Friday, in their Energy Garden, hosted by Flagler County Teacher of the Year Edward Wolff and also funded by the Florida Power and Light Student Grants Program.

“The purpose of this event for the students is to not only learn the basics of how energy is created, but also how to conserve that energy,” Wolff said. “We need to bring these inventions that people create to these fifth-grade students so that we are not predisposed to moral indifference. … They’re not looking for money; they are doing this for the right reasons.”

There were many unique inventions created by the students, such as Jayden Diaz and Destiny Simpson’s ROBO 3D, which Diaz said single-handedly creates its own tangible 3-D sculpture. To demonstrate, Diaz and Simpson wore a comb and sunglasses that the ROBO 3D had made.

“It’s insane,” Diaz said. “We’re only fifth-graders, and we’re learning how these inventions work while some sixth-graders can’t even read these right now.”

Another invention was zSpace, created by Samantha Kincaid. She explained that zSpace was a 3-D hologram that helps students learn through interaction with science.

“The frog looks real,” Kincaid said, when explaining her example from the 3-D screen. “You can put the pieces back together or even separate them apart with the touch of this electronic pencil.”

One of the more unique inventions was “The Jumping Sumo,” created by Jeffery Horne and his assistant, Jason Parsons. Horne explained the Sumo as an invention that has many tricks. The invention could do many sorts of jumps along with replicating various motions done by whatever subject is next to it.

The event was focused on energy, but Wolff believes these students can impact the world, as they pursue their innovative impulses in the future.
