Five women in Flagler County who are seeking further education now feel the support of their community. The American Association of University Women handed out its annual scholarships to five different women on Saturday, for a total of $7,000.
Sandra Campbell, co-vice president of AAUW of Flagler County with Susan Baird, presented $2,000 each to two recipients, as well as $1,000 each to three women.
Kimble Medley, who received a $2,000 scholarship, graduated with her bachelor’s degree in the spring of 2014 at Daytona State College and also has been inducted into the Daytona State Hall of Fame. Medley is pursuing her Master of Science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Stephanie Colasanti received $2,000, as well. Colasanti is a graduate of Florida Atlantic University and is pursuing a doctorate at the University of St. Augustine.
One of the most colorful resumes shown at the AAUW ceremony was that from Marianna Sbordone, who received $1,000. Sbordone is going to major in mechanical engineering at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, but not without taking her credentials with her. Sbordone has ranked No. 1 in her high school class at Flagler Palm Coast High School. She also co-founded the STAFF organization, which provides extra help to students. Sbordone also has received the Daytona Beach News-Journal Medallion of Excellence award and also won the $250 STEM scholarship last year that is sponsored by Daytona State College.
Carrie Hartnett, who won $1,000, currently attends the University of Florida and is a part of the synchronized swimming team for the Gators, as well as being the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders Award recipient last year.
Nicole Corder also won $1,000 from the AAUW.
Also at the ceremony, three girls entering the eighth grade received scholarships to attend the weeklong Tech Trek STEM camp at Eckerd College: Brea Dwyer, from Indian Trails Middle School; and Madison Mead and Aleah Selman, from Buddy Taylor Middle School.
When the ceremony was about to conclude, the NCCWSL also handed out its yearly award to give a free flight for a female student to and from the University of Maryland in Washington, D.C., from May 28 to May 30. The award this year was given to Ashleigh Fallor.
The AAUW originated in 1984 and strives for the advancement of equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.
