A Pride of winners

As the game clock ran out, Nick Antione shouted, “We get to miss school on Thursday and Friday!” The Ormond Beach Pride 12U punched its ticket to the Southeast Regional Championship tournament with a 14-6 win over the Gainesville Rattlers to win the Florida Youth Football and Cheer Conference Championship Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

“Winning back-to-back conference championships feels really good,” coach Brian Colubiale said. “We lost some great players that had to move up from last season, but we had a solid core group returning and added some kids that worked really hard this season. We are excited to represent Ormond Beach again at the Southeast Regional Championship through American Youth Football.”

The Pride, who won the regional championship last year, will look to repeat as regional champs, although the roster has been reformed.

“When you lose five to six key guys and leaders, you never know what the chemistry will be like,” Colubiale said. “But, I still think we have a shot to get to nationals. We are the returning regional champs, and it's a football game. Last night top-ranked college teams got defeated by unranked teams. And, our kids’ experience from last season’s run gives us a big advantage.”

The Pride will need to win three straight to capture the regional title, which will send them to the national tournament.
