The script continues to end the same way: Miami Central knocks Mainland (11-2) out of the playoffs and wins a championship. While the latter is still up in the air, Mainland fell to its playoff rival 33-21 Friday, Nov. 27, at Municipal Stadium.
Last week coach Scott Wilson said he preferred his Bucs grab an early lead in hopes of keeping it for the rest of the game, unlike last year’s loss, but the same fate awaited this year’s team.
After forcing the Rockets to punt from their own end zone, quarterback Denzel Houston, on third down, hooked up with Brant Williams for a 26-yard touchdown pass and catch to put the Bucs in the lead.
At the beginning of the second quarter, Central responded with a 39-yard touchdown run but missed on the extra point.
On Mainland’s ensuing drive, Houston converted a couple of first-downs with quarterback keeps, and two penalties helped the Bucs reach the red zone, where Houston hit Cyrus Fagan for a nine-yard score, but Fagan would leave the game with an injury and wouldn’t return. The extra point made it 14-6 with 3:43 remaining in the half.
Miami Central was able to get down to Mainland’s seven-yard line, but they weren’t able to punch it in before the half.
Out of halftime, the Rockets owned the Bucs. They scored 26 unanswered points, and the defense held Mainland to negative yardage. They were able to score another touchdown in the fourth quarter to go up 33-14, which put the game out of reach. Houston, with less than three minutes in the game, threw his third passing touchdown Jachai Polite to make the score respectable.
For the fourth time in five seasons, Miami Central has knocked the Bucs out of the playoffs.
