Holy Cross Orthodox Church hosts its 8th-annual World’s Fare Multi-Ethnic Food Festival.
Aromas from the kitchens of seven different countries clouded the Holy Cross Orthodox Church Saturday afternoon so much, that it was almost difficult for one to find where each smell was originating from. Traditional recipes from countries like Greece and Lebanon were available at the church’s 8th-annual World’s Fare Multi-Ethnic Food Festival, and Father Michael Byars said the countries they usually feature have large populations of Orthodox Christians.
“Some of our contingents are from those countries,” Father Byars said. “But at least 40% of our congregation are people who converted to Eastern Orthodox from western churches.”
As for the festival, the church usually highlights the same countries every year, but if it continues to be successful more variety could be added.
“The food is so good, I like all of it,” Father Byars said. “We’re getting bigger and bigger every year.”
About Holy Cross Orthodox Church
According to the churches website, in early in 1993, the need for an English-speaking Orthodox Church to serve all ethnic backgrounds in the Daytona area was discussed during a meeting of three Orthodox Christians.
“On March 21, the day of the Feast of the Adoration of the Holy Cross, the group held their first liturgical service at the home of one of the founders,” the website reads. “Through the tireless efforts and sacrificial giving of this small group as well as the many others who joined them, Holy Cross Eastern Orthodox Mission became a reality.”
