Ormond Beach participates in Intracoastal Coast Cleanup

Local residents came together for an Intracoastal Coastal Cleanup Sept. 19.

Gus Minardi was among the 1,810 Volusia County residents who spent their Saturday morning walking up and down their rivers and beaches collecting trash that so many people leave behind. Originally from Pennsylvania, Minardi said he’s been cleaning up after people for years, because he’s one of the few that really cares.

“The rest of the people don’t care about it,” he said while looking around the beach at Andy Romano Park Sept. 19. “They have no respect for the environment. It hurts. It really does hurt me.”

A part of the county’s annual International Coastal Cleanup and Halifax/Indian River Cleanup, the volunteers worked together to pick up trash from local beaches, rivers and parks. Last year, 1,209 Volusia County volunteers collected 7,314 pounds of trash during the

cleanups.

Elena Stoner, 9, and her cousin, Dune Winters, 11, agreed with Minadri that few people have a passion for the planet.

“There’s so much trash around here and no one really cares,” Winters said. “I want keep the earth healthy and clean.”
