Flagler Palm Coast put five wrestlers into the championship rounds, hoping they would go undefeated for a team victory at the 30th-annual Flagler Rotary Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 30, at FPC.
The Bulldogs didn’t win all of their matches, but Even Insalaco, Michael DeAugustino and Kaz Maia took home first-place medals. Maia also won the 2016 Rotary Outstanding Wrestler Award, defeating his rival James Nereim, whom he has beaten five times in six matches (he lost in last year’s state final), in the last two seasons. Maia also won the Most Outstanding award at the Lyman tournament, and he’s the only remaining undefeated FPC wrestler, at 41-0.
“It really feels amazing; I can’t even really explain in words how I feel,” Maia said. As the Top 2 wrestlers in their division, Maia believes they will meet two more times, in the regional and state final.
As a team, the Bulldogs tied for second place with Winter Springs, finishing just four points shy of winners Fleming Island. FPC will wrestle Osceola in a dual meet on Thursday, Feb. 4, in Osceola.
