‘This land is our land—and water!’: Ormond locals own their triathlon's Top 25

Ormond residents dominate their local triathlon.

After three consecutive tiring events, Ormond Beach locals owned the Top 25—led by Mallory Kennedy and John Dodd—in the Ormond Beach YMCA Triathlon, held on Sunday, June 26, at the Birthplace of Speed Park.

The two stole the spotlight from the overall winner. Kennedy, who began three minutes after the men, overtook most of them and was able to place second overall with a 1:02:11 time. And Dodd, 51-year-old ageless wonder of the fit world, took fourth place overall.

First, he swam what looked to be a lot more than a quarter mile in the Atlantic Ocean in 15:49—third best. Then, he biked 10 miles in 24:53—sixth best. And to top it all off, Dodd ran a 22:20 5K—11th best. When asked how he was able to beat most of

the youngsters, he only praised Kennedy, saying, “She’s my hero; she’s out here beating men.”

The Ormond Beach YMCA Triathlon was the second of three races in the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA Triathlon Series. The series will conclude with the Port Orange YMCA Triathlon at 6 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at Aunt Catfish's on the River.
