My history with crafting is kind of a mixed bag. On one hand, I’m really, really good at painting waffles, and on the other hand, I’m terrible at decoupaging pumpkins. Who knows.
But thankfully where my artistic abilities are lacking, I have creative friends and family to help me out. And by help me out, I usually mean just do it for me and let me take partial credit.
While I’ve had paintings, birthday cards and Halloween costumes made in my name, this past Friday I created something worth Snapchatting all on my own: a flower crown.
Led by the fabulous Ormond Memorial Art Museum duo Kristin Heron and Melissa Frankel, the “Full Moon Magic: Harvest Queen Autumnal Crowns” class was exactly what I need to fuel my artistic ego.
So if you saw me out Friday night, and I was acting super smug, you have them to blame. Mostly because I made something really cool that I was proud of — and because I made my mom a little jealous.
Using a vine handpicked from the museum's garden by Master Gardener Janett Taylor, I somehow managed to make a crown that fit my oddly shaped head on the first try. I know, I’m just as surprised as you.
I, along with the rest of the sold-out class, chose what to decorate the crowns with from a huge, colorful selection of flowers, butterflies, feathers and leaves. It was one of those rare moments in adulthood where you felt happy and 12.
While talking with all the cool ladies at my table — and pretending that I wasn’t constantly burning my fingers with the glue gun — I somehow managed to arrange my flowers in a way that didn’t make me want to immediately trash it and start over.
People complimented my skills, strangers asked to try it on, it was nothing short of a miracle.
That, or the magic of the full moon.
