A young woman with long, blonde hair peered through the window of Donnie's Donuts on Saturday morning. After seeing a flutter of activity behind the newly installed countertop, she decided to open the unlocked door. Much to her dismay, she was too early.
"We're not open just yet," Patti Summerlin called out. The girl, a little embarrassed, apologized and turned to leave — but Patti didn't let her.
"No come on in," she smiled. "Let us introduce ourselves."
After weeks of racing to the finish line, Patti and Donnie Summerlin were finally ready to cross the line Jan. 14. Their little donut shop was ready for business, and Ormond was ready for it too. During the first two days of their soft opening, they completely sold out of donuts.
"Everything has been crazy," Patti Summerlin said. "But we have so many people to thank. It really is a community donut shop. I get chills thinking about it all."
The shop originally opened in Daytona Beach in 2015, but after Hurricane Matthew brought rain into the first 15 feet of their shop, the couple had to relocate. Their shop at 200 E. Granada Blvd. was originally meant to be their second location.
Other than the exposed brick above the open kitchen, the inside of Donnie's is nearly bare — and the Summerlins like it that way.
"Our philosophy is, if you can't eat it, we're not gonna put that much money into it," Patti Summerlin said with a smile.
The shop will be open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and on Friday they will operate under regular hours which are as follows:
