At practice on Thursday, Oct. 18, Mainland quarterback Richard Kamara said he thought the Buccaneers' victory over a solid Matanzas team the week before set the Buccaneers on the right path: It did.
With a playoff berth within reach, Mainland (4-3, 2-0) got off to a fast start in its 65-0 win over a reeling New Smyrna Beach team on the night of Friday, Oct. 20, at Mainland High School.
D’Marcus Adams scored three times for the Buccaneers, and in three different ways — including on the ground, on a pass and during a kickoff return — and running back Tank Dell recorded a touchdown catch and a 58-yard touchdown run.
In just his fourth start of the season, Kamara tossed two touchdowns in the first quarter. Previous starter Jake Novello, who was benched following Mainland's shutout loss to Dr. Phillips on Sept. 22, replaced Kamara when the Buccaneers went up 28-0 in the second quarter.
Novello's first pass: a 50-yard bomb to Adams.
The Buccaneers were up 42-0 by halftime.
Mainland moves on to play Seabreeze at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium.
Entering its contest with a Deltona team that had lost three of its last five games, Seabreeze was on a roll. The Sandcrabs, after starting the season 0-3, were winning games, including a signature 14-13 win over New Smyrna Beach a week prior.
But on the night of Friday, Oct. 20, Seabreeze head coach Troy Coke and his squad were sent back to the drawing board after a narrow 28-21 defeat at the hands of the Wolves.
Deltona got on the board first after a bad snap went over the head of Seabreeze quarterback Jaydn Nirschl in the first quarter. Wolves senior Tremon Bright, who rushed for 142 yards, punched in the first of his two scores on the ensuing drive.
But after being down 21-7 at halftime, the Sandcrabs battled back, cutting Deltona's lead to just seven points in the third quarter. However, a pass attempt by Seabreeze's Jalen Miranda was tipped and returned 89 yards for a touchdown to give the Wolves a two-score lead in the final period.
