The first medical marijuana treatment center in Port Orange, where cannabis can be dispensed to eligible patients, had a grand opening June 25 at its location, 3665 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Suite 201.

Surterra Wellness has a homey, rather than a clinical, decor. Much of the consultation with new patients is done around the table in a kitchen area, where coffee, fruits or other refreshments are available, said communications manager Kim Hawks.

“We want patients to feel at home,” she said.

As medical marijuana dispensaries are being established, local governments are tasked with where they should be located. Hawks said there is no need for concern.

“We bring value to any area,” she said. “The same folks you see going into (retail stores) down the street are the same folks coming in here.”

Centers need to be accessible, Hawks said.

“Do you want your friend to have to drive an hour and a half to get her medication?” she asked.

To utilize the service, a person must have a medical marijuana card issued by a Florida-licensed physician.

“It’s not recreational; it’s medicinal.”

SUSAN TROCKI, of Ormond Beach, on medical marijuana

Visiting the shop for the Open House was Susan Trocki, of Ormond Beach, who has discussed medical marijuana usage with her doctor. She’s interested in the fact that medical marijuana utilizes both THC and CBD and CBD does not produce a high.

“It’s not recreational; it’s medicinal,” Trocki said.

The products at Surterra Wellness, including tincture oils, topical lotions, oral sprays, patches and vaper pins, offer various mixtures of THC and CBD.

Hawks believes that smoking cannabis should be legal, because a doctor may feel it is necessary, and a rule should not stand between a doctor and a patient.

Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers must manufacture their own product and cannot sell in other states because of federal laws.
