Port Orange is not unfamiliar with food trucks being present at the various events that take place throughout the year. However, on Saturday, May 26, the Food Truck Wars will be taking food on the go to a new level.

It's the first time this event, which allows attendees to try cuisine from around the state, will be happening in the city.

The seven-hour event will bring in 40 food trucks that will be vying for five different prizes: casual cuisine, delectable dessert, ticket taker, peoples choice award and top food sales. As the day goes on, eliminations will take place until the awards are announced near the end of the event. Councilman Drew Bastian will be among the judges.

The idea for the Food Truck Wars stemmed from Food Truck Crazy Inc. President Liz Rivera Otts, who was brought up in the military and frequently attended block parties where families could spend time together. Rivera said she wanted to continue that same tradition, leading her to start Food Truck Crazy Inc. and later the Food Truck Wars.

The competition started around 2011 and is now more than a food event: it's also a way to give back to the community. Rivera Otts said she is working with the Port Orange Community Trust to give back a portion of the proceeds to the community.

"What really makes me happy is to look out and see people enjoying the day," Rivera Otts said. "It's just nice to once in awhile get outside with your family, and that is the best part of the day."

According to Rivera Otts, the event will take place rain or shine unless the weather could become dangerous.
