The word “aloha” means much more than just hello and goodbye. It also communicates love and compassion, and those are the qualities that Angela DiMauro plans to bring to her recently opened Aloha Realty in Ormond-by-the-Sea at 1300 Ocean Shore Blvd.
DiMauro moved here from Hawaii in 2012 and brought the Hawaiian spirit with her. She started selling real estate, and now has her broker’s license.
DiMauro loves the area and declares it her “forever home.” She said Ormond-by-the-Sea reminds her of Hawaii, with the friendliness of the people and the small-town feel.
“You run into people you know at the grocery store,” she said. “I love it. People support each other.”
Ormond-by-the-Sea still has a small beach town ambience, she said.
DiMauro and her staff will not be “selling” homes, she said. Success in real estate comes by educating and informing buyers and helping them find the right home for them.
“We make them feel comfortable in what they are doing,” she said. “It’s an emotional and important decision.”
HAWAII TO OBTS
DiMauro has always traveled. As a child, she moved around the country because of her father’s occupation as a surveyor. Her homelife became an unhappy situation, and she left home at age of 16, making her own way ever since.
“I’ve always had perseverance and believed in myself,” she said. “One of my favorite stories in the world is The Little Engine that Could. I believe we all have one inside.”
Her travels included Hawaii, and on the Big Island of Hawaii in 2012, she was operating a catering business called Mama Mia Delivers. She got a call from her ex-husband who was living in Ormond-by-the-Sea. His cancer had returned and the prognosis was not good. DiMauro closed her business in 48 hours and travelled to Florida to take care of him.
“It was a privilege to cook and take care of Max,” she said. “Spending the last days of his life with him was priceless.”
She had sunk all of her earnings into the catering business so she arrived in Florida with little resources. She decided to try real estate, and it turned out to be another successful business for her.
She has since remarried and has made many friends, she said. She has formed a group called Wacky Wahinis (women only) who enjoy weekly get-togethers.
A UNIQUE LOCATION
DiMauro has a varied level of experience in her three-person staff.
Dan Giaimo has been selling real estate for 30 years. He also plays music at restaurants around town, including Origins Bar and Grill, which is down the street. He points out the uniqueness of Ormond-by-the-Sea, saying nowhere else in Florida can you find affordable housing so close to the beach, plus State Road A1A which has an unobstructed view of the ocean.
The smaller houses, called cottages, were built around 1960, but there has been a surge of remodeling, especially since 2013, DiMauro said.
Lorraine Hunnefeld has more than 20 years of experience.
Matt Oechslin is just starting out in real estate, and he said he never considered it as a career until he met DiMauro.
“I was inspired by Angela,” he said. “She’s a very impressive person.”
