A check for $3,000 was presented on Sept. 25 to the Halifax Health Foundation. The money was raised at the eighth annual May Day Memorial Surf Classic at the Flagler Beach Pier. The surfing tournament is held annually in memory of Dolly Watson, who was an intensive care unit nurse for Halifax Health. Haley Michelle Watson, the event’s organizer, lost her mother, Dolly, to heart disease in 2006. Dolly Watson was 46 years old.

Germfree of Ormond in top 50

The City of Ormond Beach and GrowFL have announced that Germfree is among 50 companies in the state selected for the 2018 Florida Companies to Watch. There were more than 500 nominees for the award, presented by GrowFL, a statewide economic development organization, in association with the Edward Lowe Foundation.

The winning company’s management team, competitive market position and strong community involvement were among several factors that put them in contention for the award, according to a press release

GrowFL focuses exclusively on “second-stage” companies, defined as those with six to 150 full-time employees and between $750,000 and $100 million in annual revenue.

“These standout companies are all led by entrepreneurs and have demonstrated their capacity and intent to grow,” said Dr. Tom O’Neal, GrowFL executive director. “They also all have critical intellectual property or a niche position that gives them a competitive edge in their markets,” he said.

August housing report

After two months of sliding sales, the number of single-family homes sold around the greater Daytona Beach area rose dramatically in August, according to an analysis of Multiple Listing Service data by Realtor Ron Wysocarski, broker and CEO of Wyse Home Team Realty in Port Orange.

For August, the MLS reported that 476 existing single-family homes were sold with a median home sales price of $230,750. That amounts to a 10 percent increase in sales compared to the same month last year and a four percent rise in sales compared to July. Year to date, sales are up by three percent.

Median sales prices rose slightly, by two percent, compared to August 2017, and there was a similar gain from the previous month. Year to date, median sales prices remain 7.3 percent higher than the first eight months of 2017.

There were 155 condo units sold around the Daytona Beach area in August, reported Wyse. That’s just a few sales shy of the 158 units sold in August 2017.

Condo sales were up by 12 percent in August compared to July, and median prices of condos were up by 27 percent compared to July.

“It’s good to see median prices rebounded over July’s numbers,” Wysocarski said. “However, we anticipate the local condo market will soon settle into a somewhat neutral position, where shifts in median prices and sales are likely to be more subtle than we’ve seen in recent years.”
