The Our Lady of Hope Knights of Columbus Council 8086 of Port Orange collected canned goods during the 40 cans of food for 40 days of Lent Fund Raising Program. On Wednesday, May 8, the council donated these goods to the OLOH Outreach Ministry for its food pantry to assist the less fortunate throughout the area.
A Port Orange resident has recently released her second book, "From Me to We," a compilation of stories and advice created to guide widows and widowers through the process of grief, offering advice on how to find joy, and maybe love, again.
Maryann Hartzell-Curran's first book, "From We to Me," was released in 2013. It was a journey through her first year of being a widow, as told in a series of letters to her friend. In her new book, Hartzell-Curran shares her experiences, mistakes and achievements in cultivating personal relationships after that first year as a widow as she began to emerge from mourning and venture into life as a single person.
Hartzell-Curran taught both special education and preschool in metro Chicago, and, has a master's degree in counseling psychology. She is now is a public speaker and conducts grief workshops using a curriculum she wrote titled "Moving On" and leads grief groups in communities on Florida’s East Coast.
“I believe grief is a process," Hartzell-Curran said. "Some people do not go through all the stages of grief but spend time in one or more for longer periods of time. It’s important not to get stuck in the 'stages,' but rather use them as a guideline.”
Hartzell-Curran was married to her high school sweetheart for 32 years before he died. Four years later, she learned a lot about herself as a widow and eventually remarried. She and her second husband have lived in Florida for 16 years.

Spruce Creek High School freshman Isabella Ramnath will be a delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Lowell, Massachusetts, from June 23-25. Ramnath is to represent SCHS based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine.
The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields. The event aims to motivate and direct these students to stay true to their dream and help them to reach their goals.
Ramnath’s nomination letter was signed by Dr. Mario Capecchi, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine and the science director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists.
During the three-day Congress, Ramnath will join students from across the country and hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science Winners talk about leading medical research, be given advice from Ivy League and top medical school deans on what to expect in medical school, hear former patients' stories, be inspired by fellow teen medical science prodigies and learn about advances and the future in medicine and medical technology.
When the City Council approved renovations for the old police department building, now the Dorothy L. Hukill City Center Annex, the council also approved an additional item: a new home for the city's records.
Port Orange’s records were previously housed in a warehouse near the Public Works facility and the Water Meter Shop for decades, said City Clerk Robin Fenwick. The warehouse was worn and records were not properly organized for easy retrieval.
City staff worked for a year to review the boxes of records, organize them, dispose of records that met the retention period and properly label all remaining records. The boxes were then moved to the new records center by J&M Moving Company.
Port Orange resident Janet Wisneski has been named the Joe Petrock Auxiliary Volunteer of the month for May by the Halifax Health-Auxiliary. Along with the honor of being Volunteer of the Month, Wisneski received a gift card and will be a nominee for the auxiliary’s Volunteer of the Year award.
As a member of the Halifax Health-Auxiliary since 2016, Wisneski has donated more than 762 hours of service as an information desk volunteer for the Halifax Health Medical Center.
The Port Orange Police Department lost a member of their family on Thursday, May 16, as VIP Corporal Marjorie LaPiere died unexpectedly.
LaPiere served as a POPD VIP since 2015 and had been an important part of the VIP Organization and POPD family.
A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of LaPiere will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4. The service will be held at Our Lady of Hope Church, located at 4675 S. Clyde Morris Blvd.
In lieu of flowers, the family instead asks those who wish to give a donation do so to their favorite charity in memory of LaPiere and address it to: Curtis LaPiere, 1187 Southfork Court, Port Orange, Fl. 32129.
