The two young entrepreneurs arrived at the meeting fresh from surfing the waves. Eros Exarhou and Shawn Christensen, both of Ormond Beach, are hoping to start a business called GoJuice at 762 S. Atlantic Ave., next to Tipsy Taco.
The neighborhood meeting Sept. 5 at Ormond Beach Regional Library was required because they will be next to a residential area. Residents in the area were notified about the meeting.
Serving made-to-order juices, smoothies , acai bowls and specialty coffees, the business will be a franchise of the GoJuice in New Smyrna Beach, which opened in 2014. Customers will park and get their order to go.
The two have an infectious, youthful energy. Both surfers, they say they want to cater to a healthy lifestyle.
“That’s our mission,” Exarhou said. “Everything is organic as possible.”
Exarhou graduated from Seabreeze High School in 2011 and Christenson in 2006.
They say their most unique offerings will be their banana coffee and peanut butter that they make themselves. They will have a low environmental impact, they say. The serving material will be a compostable material and not plastic.
“We’re all about the ocean,” Christensen said.
In addition to a drive-in business, they expect to get customers from the high school as well as the beach.
Steven Spraker, planning director, said the business is a permitted use for the area, so the only requirement after the meeting will be site plan approval. Construction could begin after approval.
The only neighbor who appeared at the meeting was Cathy Melody Johnson, 2018 City Commission candidate, who said she is favor of the project.
“That’s a good use for that space,” she said.
The now-empty lot will be landscaped with a fence providing separation from the residential area.
Christensen, a former manager of a local Maui Nix, lived in Hawaii for five years, where he was a photographer. Recently, he trained at the original GoJuice in New Smyrna Beach.
Exarhou traveled as a professional surfer and also did some acting and modeling work. You can spot him in the first two minutes of the Baywatch movie starring Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, he said.
GoJuice Ormond Beach will be the first franchise and there are plans for a second one in Amelia Island. The original GoJuice was started in Costa Rica.
“We’re starting something new and fun for the community,” Exarhou said. “We’re super excited to bring this to our hometown.”

Ocean Shore Blvd. The private club is adjacent to the beach allowing ocean access. A shuttle will be available from Latitude Margaritaville, a housing development on LPGA Boulevard.
