In a conference call with the media, Flagler County Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord expressed confidence in Palm Coast's ability to handle the effects of Tropical Cyclone 9 (which will become Tropical Storm Humberto if it passes a certain threshold in strength).
The tropical cyclone's effects are expected to reach Flagler between Saturday afternoon and Sunday, though he emphasized that these predictions carry a margin of error. The storm's effects could include sustained tropical storm-force winds (with an estimated four percent chance of hurricane force winds), three to six inches of rain, potential coastal and intracoastal waterway flooding and tides six inches to one foot above normal at high tide due to minor storm surge. The county is likely to enter a tropical storm watch or warning later today.
“We don’t want anyone to panic, but residents should secure loose outdoor items – like patio furniture – so they don’t become hazards,” said Lord in an earlier statement from the county. “Also expect minor flooding.”
The Flagler Beach Pier will be open in the morning and will be checked every three or four hours for swaying or other evidence of damage, Lord said. The beaches will also remain open, though outgoing boats will be warned about stronger rip currents.
Flagler County Commissioner Joe Mullins said he is "very confident" in the county staff's ability to handle any effects from TC 9.
"The community is calm and in great hands," Mullins said.
“We just want people to be aware,” Lord said. “We will continue to monitor the storm and keep everyone posted about any significant change.”
