For the first time, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office Communications Center has earned national accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, joining less than 200 centers in the U.S., a press release announced on Thursday, Aug. 6.
The award was granted virtually on Friday, July 31, and comes after months of review and site assessments. VCSO, overall, is nationally accredited by the commission as well.
“We now join a very small, select group of communication centers across the country that have demonstrated excellence in several categories,” said Jim Soukup, director of VSO Communications, in the press release.
All 911 or non-emergency calls for law enforcement, fire or emergency medical service is handled by the telecommunicators inside $21 million communications center, which became fully operational in 2013. It located at 3825 Tiger Bay Road in Daytona Beach.
“I’m incredibly proud of the work done by our Communications Center, day in and day out,” said Sheriff Mike Chitwood in the press release.“This recognition shows we are committed to best practices and serving our community, especially through the toughest emergency situations.”
Accreditation is reviewed every four years. In between, the agency must submit annual reports and participate in web-based assessments.
