Voting in-person for the primary election? Here is what you should expect

With the primary election a little over three weeks away, and early voting starting on Aug. 8, Volusia County Supervisor of Elections Lisa Lewis outlined the safety measures that will be in place at polling places due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our goal is to provide a safe space for our voters and our poll workers," said Lewis during the COVID-19 briefing by the county on Friday, July 24.

If you choose vote in-person at a polling place, Lewis said you should expect to practice social distancing while checking in. Booths will be spaced 6 feet apart, and plexiglass will separate the poll workers and voters. Poll workers will also be provided masks, gloves and face shields, and all surfaces will be disinfected between uses. In addition, all voters will receive their own pen to use and take home afterward.

Lewis also explained that some voters will be receiving a new voter information card because some precincts have been removed.

COVID-19 scams?

Volusia County reported an additional 168 new cases of COVID-19 and a positivity rate of 10.6% on Friday, July 24, for a total of 5,969 since the start of the pandemic.

At the county's briefing, Holly Smith, communications manager for the Deportment of Health in Volusia County, spoke about social media posts circulating throughout the state. These are from people claiming to know someone who canceled their COVID-19 testing appointment, and were later notified that they have tested positive.

“I can tell you I’ve asked many people to give me information to tell me, ‘Who are you and let us look in the system,' and no one wants to come forward for us to be able to investigate to find out what’s actually happening with these," Smith said.

She explained that when an individual takes a test, the test provider is responsible for notifying the individual of his or her results. Smith said there are scams going around in the state, where people are asked for social security data or financial information over the phone. DOH will never ask for this information, she said.

“Even in these difficult times, we still have people who are trying to take advantage of other people," Smith said.

Whether the social media posts are another scam or rumor is yet to be confirmed. Smith asked that people who have had this experience happen to them directly contact their local DOH office.

“The biggest reason is we need to social distance between everyone within check-in and the voters as they are voting," she said.

Early voting will run until Aug. 15. If you're planning to vote by mail, the deadline to request a ballot is Aug. 8. On Election Day, Aug. 18, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
