I always knew I wanted to be a mom. I planned my career around it. So in July 2018, when my husband, Brady, and I found out we were having our first child, I was surprised by my initial fears.
I loved my job fiercely and was fully focused on it. Brady and I were just getting in the groove of working together full time as spouses on our real estate business, and I wasn’t sure if I was ready to add being a mama into the mix. I went through ups and downs well into my second trimester.
After I had my baby, I absolutely adored being a mom. But I wasn't able to work much, other than stealing time here and there, and I missed working. I missed the satisfaction and accomplishment of setting and achieving business goals. Postpartum depression was a real thing for me. I began to seek out resources for not just moms, but working moms, in Flagler County.
There were almost none, which led me to creating the Facebook group "Flagler County Working Mamas." I assumed a couple of my friends would join, and we could commiserate about our daily challenges and laugh at our daily mishaps. Two thousand, two hundred members later, I guess I wasn’t as alone as I thought.
The vision of the group is to encourage and empower the working mamas in our community while building relationships with one another.
So why am I here in the Palm Coast Observer? Just like the group, the purpose of this column is to inspire, encourage, and connect with the working mamas out there. Each week, you will read stories of my adventures as a working mom — the joyful and the heartbreaking.
We'll discuss everything from meal prepping and 20-minute workouts to best places to shop and favorite coffee shops. We will have guest writers and interviews with other working mamas, and through that, get to know each other a little better.
This journey of motherhood is a challenging one, and I want you to know you’re not alone either. I believe that empowered women empower women, so grab a glass of wine, find a quiet spot (ha!) and let’s get to know each other!
