Editor's note: The following letter was addressed and sent to Ormond Beach City Commissioner Susan Persis. It is republished here with permission.

Dear Susan Persis:

We applaud your support of our city’s environment. Currently, the biggest threat to the Ormond Beach outdoor environment, including 37 directly impacted subdivisions, is the proposed runway extension at Ormond Municipal Airport. You have been told that the extension will reduce noise but larger, heavier aircraft and jets will actually require longer takeoffs and landings, increasing noise and air pollution and reducing property values.

Also, at the June 1st commission meeting you inquired if there would be any off-airport property trees involved in this extension project. You were told "no off-airport trees would be involved." It addressed 35 acres on-airport property trees would be removed.

Ask for the new draft supplemental environmental assessment and note "Off Airport Obstruction Removal." Appears there are plans for obstruction removal in six private properties.
