After a long pause due to COVID-19, there will be two consecutive free public poetry events for audiences and participants to enjoy.

The first event will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 17 (rain date: Sunday, April 18), onstage at the Rockefeller Gardens stage, across the street from The Casements, located at 25 Riverside Drive.

The second event will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 24 (rain date: Sunday, April 25), at the Thin Man Watts Amphitheater, 322 South Clara Ave. in DeLand.

All styles of poetry, song, and storytelling are welcome. The events are open to the public. For safety and social distancing, the number of performers are limited so it is asked that performers preregister.

“We are so glad to give performers a chance to share their creativity,” said David B. Axelrod, even host.

He is also a Volusia County poet laureate.

“As for the kind of content people may hear, these are outdoor events and a public stage," Axelrod said. "Families may be passing so we ask performers to respect the audience. Respect the mic.”

There is a limit of 25 performers. Depending on the number who wish to take the stage, everyone will have 3-5 minutes to perform. To register, or for more information about the days, email Axelrod at [email protected].

The events are co-sponsored by Creative Happiness Institute, Ormond Beach Main Street, Ormond Beach Arts District, Tomoka Poets, Breaking Bad, MACDeLand, and the African-American Museum of DeLand. People should bring their own chair, blanket or pillow and their own drink.
