William Chance Medders was arrested by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office Investigative Unit after questioning on May 12 and charged with Burglary of a Structure and Grand Theft.
“This is yet another example of how our investigative team’s persistence proved this guy committed the crime and arrested him,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Our lead deputy on this case went above and beyond to get this guy off the streets. Of course it helps provide an investigative lead when you leave your ID at the scene of the crime you committed! Obviously, he hasn’t learned his lesson, so I hope he makes himself cozy at the Green Roof Inn. Medders did the crime, now he’ll do the time.”
On March 11, the owner of a residence in Daytona North contacted the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and reported that forced entry was made into one of his sheds. The victim noticed the shed doors were damaged, the padlock was missing and several items were scattered about the property or missing.
FCSO Deputies arrived on the scene, and it was discovered that forced entry was attempted to the main residence. A bi-fold wallet containing the identification card of Medders was located nearby.
Detectives later met with the victim at the FCSO Evidence Unit, where the victim was able to identify numerous items that belonged to him.
On May 12, 2021, FCSO was able to make contact with Medders, of 3715 Arbor Ave., in Bunnell, where he was questioned about the burglary.
Medders could not explain why his wallet was located at the scene of the burglary. He stated that all items that were on him at the time of the Trespassing arrest were found on the street, purchased by him, or given to him. He also denied any involvement in committing a burglary. Medders admitted to being on Methamphetamines during the timeframe of when the burglary occurred.
This is not Medders’ first encounter with law enforcement. On March 24, 2021, Medders was arrested on an unrelated charge of Criminal Trespassing after Warning, and at that time, a large number of stolen items were found in his possession, some of which matched items that the victim had reported stolen.
He has previously been arrested for Possession of Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Battery, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Out of County Arrest Warrant, Habitual Traffic Offender, Methamphetamine Possession, Grand Theft, Burglary of Occupied Dwelling, Driving While License Suspended, Burglary of Occupied Dwelling with Assault and Battery and Armed Burglary.
Medders is being held at the Flagler County Inmate Facility with no bond.
