Ricky Smith was arrested on May 14 while a passenger in a car pulled over for speeding by Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies. He is charged locally with Giving a False Name to Law Enforcement and also held on his Volusia County warrants.

“This is another example of how the FCSO is utilizing technology like our RAPID ID system to fight crime, apprehend fugitives and keep our community safe,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Technology like this is an invaluable tool for our deputies because, believe it or not, not everyone is honest with law enforcement. This guy thought he could pull a fast one and give a false name to deputies. That might work other places but not in Flagler County.”

On May 14, FCSO deputies conducted a traffic stop on a white Ford for speeding at the intersection of North Ocean Shore Blvd and Bay Drive.

Deputies made contact with the driver and her two male passengers. When asked why she was speeding, the driver told deputies that she was ‘not from around here and didn’t know the speed limit.’

While the driver was collecting the rest of her information, deputies asked if the other occupants could provide their IDs or names. The back seat passenger provided his ID and the front seat passenger provided deputies with the name ‘Micky E. Smith,’ later identified as Ricky Smith, and stated that he was from Georgia.

Deputies relayed the information given by passengers back to Flagler County Communications who advised that there was an active warrant for a male named ‘Ricky Smith’ who often uses the alias ‘Micky E. Smith.’ The warrant was for charges including: Burglary of an Unoccupied Structure, Grand Theft, Trafficking in Stolen Property, and Possession of Burglary Tools.

Flagler County Communications was able to send deputies a picture of Ricky Smith and the photo heavily resembled ‘Micky.’ However, ‘Micky’ continuously denied that it was him.

Due to the possibility of ‘Micky’ providing a false name, deputies detained him and utilized FCSO’s Rapid ID at the traffic stop to positively identify him as Ricky Smith.

The driver and her other passenger were released from the scene with a verbal warning. Smith was arrested and transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility.
