Starting teachers in the Flagler County School District will now earn $48,363. And the district's salary schedule will increase by $1,150 for each yearly step.

The new starting teacher salary is an increase of $863 over the state mandated minimum starting salary of $47,500, which the district achieved last year.

At a special meeting Oct. 28, the School Board unanimously approved the proposed salary schedule, which had been ratified by the Flagler County Educators Association.

The new starting salary is in effect for the current school year with the district retroactively adding increases back to July 1.

“This allows us to be ahead of all of our surrounding districts for starting salaries for teachers,” Bobby Bossardet, the assistant superintendent for academic services, told the board.

In addition, beginning next year, annual contract teachers will receive a performance pay salary increase of 1,078, if they are rated effective, and $1,438, if they are rated highly effective.

Most of the district’s teachers are performance pay/annual contract teachers. Only 280 teachers remain who chose to be grandfathered in under the previous professional services contract.

Each step increase on the salary schedule will be equalized at $1,150. According to new state law, salary increases must be 75% of the district’s largest step increase, which is currently $1,596. Raising the rate of increase would not be sustainable under the new law, Bossardet said.

"The district worked collaboratively with the union to develop a sustainable plan," he said.

“We have looked at many different scenarios, and we ended up (with) a revised salary schedule that would equalize all steps,” Bossardet said.
