Carolyn Pascoe said that knowing that her students are counting on her motivates her to start every day new, no matter the challenges.

After all, her favorite thing about teaching is the children, Pascoe said in a statement to the Observer.

"They bring joy to my life," Pascoe said. "I love coming to work every day knowing that I can make a difference."

Pascoe has been teaching for 12 years at Pathways Elementary. For the past three years, Pascoe, who was named Pathways' Teacher of the Year, has been teaching fifth grade English language arts and social studies.

She decided to become a teacher after spending time volunteering at Pathways when her daughter was a student. Pascoe had been a stay-at-home mom at the time.

"The more time I spent about children, I realized I wanted to go back to school to become a teacher," Pascoe said.

Outside of the classroom, she enjoys spending time with family, traveling, going to the beach, cooking and being outdoors.

Being nominated for Teacher of the Year by her coworkers is an honor, she said. One thing she's taking away from the experience is knowing her hard work and dedication is not only appreciated, but recognized.

"We all work hard at this job and for them to recognize me to represent our school is appreciated," Pascoe said.

Her advice to students?

"Although at times life can be challenging, it’s important to persevere," Pascoe said. "Be the best you can be every day!"
