Instant karma

11:59 p.m. — 1400 block of East Moody Boulevard, Bunnell

DUI. A Bunnell man who was under arrest for a DUI charge was more concerned about being able to smoke his next cigarette than being arrested.

A police officer was driving along East Moody Boulevard when a white Ford pickup sped out of a bar, nearly hitting the officer’s patrol car, according to the suspect’s arrest report. As the man left his truck to check for any damage, the officer noticed the man was heavily slurring his speech.

The officer told the man to return to his truck and when he did, the suspect kept repeatedly searching his cab and pockets for a cigarette. The officer told the suspect to quit moving around, to which the man said “I just want a cigarette. I’m going to jail, I know.”

Not only was the man's speech incoherent, the officer smelled alcohol on the suspect’s breath and found opened beer bottles in the center console, the report said.

As the suspect was placed under arrest, another officer contacted the first to say the suspect had been involved in a crash in the bar’s parking lot right before almost hitting the first officer.

Hiding in plain sight

11:43 a.m. — intersection County Road 325, Highway U.S. 1, Bunnell

Cocaine possession. A man found with almost 17 grams of cocaine hidden in his underwear attempted to hide more in the backseat of a Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle.

The suspect was originally pulled over for the tint of his windows when deputies smelled marijuana in the car, according to the man’s arrest report. Deputies searched the man’s vehicle and found marijuana residue and sandwich bags in the car, but one deputy noticed an unnatural bulge in the man's pants.

While searching the suspect’s person, deputies found the 17 grams hidden near the suspect’s genitals, and he was placed under arrest on several drug possession charges and placed in the back of the patrol car, the report said.

Later, one deputy reviewed the patrol car footage and saw the suspect pull another baggie of cocaine from his “buttocks area” and shoved the contents into the patrol car’s backseat.
