- In a final board meeting before the election, Volusia County School Board members urged voters to support the district’s one-mill property tax referendum. The district, facing a deficit of at least $25 million, had cut almost 2,000 employees, including 976 teachers, since 2007. The one-mill property tax increase would have raised $26 million annually — enough to support 250 teacher jobs. (Voters ultimately rejected it.)
- The Ormond Beach city government prepared to amended its ordinances to add setbacks for cell towers in residential areas, requiring that the base of a tower be at least 2 feet away from a residential zone for every one foot of the structure's height. For instance, a 100-foot tower could be no closer than 200 feet from the nearest home.
