For a group of local children, Christmas came early.
How many toys can you buy with $100?
That's a question children from Ormond Beach Elementary, Osceola Elementary, Pine Trail Elementary, Pathways Elementary, and Tomoka Elementary set out to answer with the help of an Ormond Beach Police officer during the fourth-annual Shop with a Cop event at Walmart on Saturday, Dec. 19.
Walmart provided the police department with $2,000 worth of gift cards for 20 participants, who bought a variety of gifs for themselves and their family members. From life-sized Barbie dolls to lightsabers, the children perused the toy aisles with excitement. After shopping, in lieu of the usual barbecue which had to be forgone due to COVID-19, Walmart provided the children with pre-packaged meals.
This program is part of the department's outreach efforts.
