Almost a dozen dogs need a safe, loving home after deputies removed them from a squalid private rescue facility in Osteen.
A concerned citizen reported the facility — the Wet Nose Big Heart Animal Rescue, on Reed Ellis Road — last week, according to a county government news release.
Deputies and Animal Services staff searched it Sept. 6, finding a dead dog and many neglected animals, including 13 dogs, four ducks and a horse.
The animals had no access to food, water or shelter. They were malnourished, with fleas and internal parasites.
They are being treated by Animal Services’ veterinary team as the criminal investigation proceeds.
The horse and ducks have been adopted, but most of the seized dogs need homes.
“Some are ready for adoption, while others are in need of foster care until permanent arrangements can be made," Volusia County Animal Services Director Adam Leath said, according to the news release. "These animals have been living in awful conditions and are in need of a stable, loving environment.”
